Lighting
We decided that when we were filming we wanted to have a very atmospheric feel to the teaser trailer To do this we needed the right lighting each time we wanted to film, so we chose to film just as the sun was going down and it was getting dark, this made sure that the teaser trailer didn't feel as if it was shot in bright daylight and not scary because of that factor. Although in some shots we needed to have it bright, an example of this is in the shots with Luke in the interview room we needed to be realistic so we chose an area where we could make this happen.
When filming it was hard to make sure all the shots look good, because of lighting. The time of day we decided to film was not the most well thought out, because when we were filming we needed to film quickly and not have to shooting the same shot, otherwise we would loose light for the next shot. After filming for the first time and realizing our mistake on the planning of timing, we decided to plan out our every shot that we would do next time we went filming, on addition to that we thought of extra shots that we could do if we had more time and we felt as if we could use the footage later on when editing.

We knew that we would not be able to get our trailer looking anything like the professional ones that are shown to the public and one of the reasons for this is that they have cameras that cost thousands of pounds and we have to use ones that cost about £320. This significantly limits us to getting the same shots as the professionals do, considering their cameras have many more settings and adjustments that they can use to get a much more specific shot. We also do not have the same technology as they do to be able to edit, to add on to this we are unable to get the same effects as they want, because the people using the editing software know everything is to know, and we are still learning.
Examples of shots we took
SINISTER (2012)When we were looking at trailers to take inspiration from we found that sinister was an all round great trailer. One reason for this is because in Sinister (2012) the lighting is particularly well done, the lighting can completely change the whole atmosphere of the film, we thought that we could take inspiration from this trailer and apply it to our own, thinking about how each shot it lit and what we could do in editing to make it better, for example in Final Cut Express we could use the Colour Correcter to improve how dark it was, creating a more fearful atmosphere and therefore drawing the viewer into the trailer more.
When we were watching the trailer of Sinister (2012) we thought that the shots after and including the attic shots were particularly effective with regards to lighting, making it ever so more creepy in every shot and giving the viewer a clue as to there was something wrong and this is confirmed when he watches the old recordings of the family being hanged. It then goes in to what happened to the family there before them, and then what happens to the family that are living there now. |
